K-9 Unit
Training Requirements
The K-9 Unit is a specialized unit within the patrol division consisting of two officers and two specially trained canines.
A handler must possess a multitude of qualifications and undergo initial as well as extensive recurrent training.
Certifications
Currently both K-9s are certified through the United States Police Canine Association and are members of U.S.P.C.A. Region 14.
Each K-9 team is certified in the areas of handler protection, evidence searches, tracking, building searches, field searches, suspect apprehension, obedience, agility, and narcotic detection.
K-9 in Conjunction with Public Schools
The K-9 unit works in conjunction with other area law enforcement agencies and schools in Finney County to complete random narcotics sniffs of the public schools and secondary education facilities in Finney County to help maintain a drug free learning environment.
Demonstration Requests
The use of dogs in law enforcement is rapidly expanding. The K-9 Unit is available for public demonstrations to area schools, civic organizations, and groups.
